CB Radio
CB radio in Australia is operated across two separate frequency bands.
• In the range HF band (26.965MHz – 27.405MHz) using Amplitude Modulation (AM)
• In the UHF band (476.4125MHz and 477.4125MHz) using Frequency Modulation (FM)
The HF band is not widely used anymore as it can be badly affected by radio traffic coming in from distant locations; HF radio waves have the ability to ‘skip’ under the ionosphere and your local conversation might be suddenly interrupted (as atmospheric conditions change through the day) by someone having their own conversation on that same channel half way around the world. HF communications (particularly over a sideband) can however provide a bit more range than UHF. Sideband CB sets are quite rare these days but we do have models available for sale.
The UHF band is by far the most commonly used for CB radio as it is less subject to atmospheric conditions. Most of the curernt models have 80 channels to use.
No license is required to operate a CB radio, but there are some limitations placed on the power of the transmitters and the way the radios may be used. All of the CB-class radios sold by Commex comply with Australian regulations. Contact us if you need more information.
